2. VOLUNTEERS

"I doubt if you will ever find a more rewarding experience than spending time in Laikipia, or further north in Samburu with the Mobile Field Teams. The colourful, friendly, people that you will meet, contrast sharply with the problems faced by these people, set against a most beautiful environment" Conrad Chilvers (Volunteer)

The Community Health Africa Trust and the Nomadic Communities Trust welcome volunteers who can offer specific skills to the organisation. Unfortunately CHAT/NCT is not in a financial position to cover the cost of maintaining volunteers on site. However, the costs incurred during the stay of a volunteer will be  designed to ensure that basic expenses are not carried by the organisation. Please be advised that whilst volunteering for CHAT/NCT is bound to be a life changing experience, life in rural Kenya can present significant challenges to the uninitiated. Volunteers are advised to be well-informed of these challenges before agreeing to support the Community Health Africa Trust and The Nomadic Communities Trust. Those interested in volunteering for CHAT/NCT should contact the programme co-ordinator directly: Ms Shanni Wreford-Smith at
mobileclinicsafrica@gmail.com

3. DONATIONS AND FUNDING

CHAT/NCT work closely with the Kenyan Ministry of Health. However, the Government is currently not in a position to fully support or absorb these programmes. For this reason CHAT/NCT are strongly dependent in the short-term on institutional grants and private donor contributions. The NCT and CHAT Trusts are legitimately separate. Funding for these community-based organisations is sourced independently.

In the past The Community Health Africa Trust has received funding from The Mpala Wildlife Foundation, Family Health International (FHI) and PEPFAR (through USAID into the APHIA 11 Rift Valley Provincial Fund). Currently this organisation is receiving funds from the Global Fund Round 7 (via CARE Kenya) until 31 March 2011 and some funding from TOWA (A Kenyan Government DFID initiative).

Previously funding for the Nomadic Communities Trust (NCT) was supplied by PEPFAR through CDC/CHF. Current funding from CDC/CRS terminates in September 2010. TOWA has supplied funding to NCT for a small initiative for six months.

In the past funding for NCT/CHAT activities has also been sourced through the Global Fund and the Tides Foundation (Canada). Donations in the past have been received from the Australian High Commission as well as private contributors. CHAPS (USA) continues to source funds for both organisations.

4. DIRECT DONATIONS

Without the generous support of direct donations we would not be able to maintain those initiatives that have already been implemented. Support for new ventures that aim to target the expansion of existing health and educational services to the Laikipia and Samburu regions is most welcome.
